ABOUT VSS

VSS and the referring veterinarian work together to establish a diagnostic, surgical, and rehabilitative plan for each patient. Surgical procedures are performed in the hospital of the referring veterinarian or at our referral centers.

How VSS works

VSS is a referral only surgical practice. We perform advanced surgical procedures in the hospitals of current practice partners or at our referral center in Brockport. If you would like to refer a patient or request a consultation please contact us.

The Process:

For Current Practice Partners:

  • Primary care veterinarian establishes a diagnosis and coordinates the needed surgical procedure(s) with VSS. Please request an appointment here.
  • VSS brings all necessary surgical instruments and equipment to the referring vet’s facility.
  • Primary care veterinarian provides surgical preparation of the patient, anesthesia monitoring, and post-op care.
  • VSS provides all surgical reports and post-op instructions.
  • VSS remains available post-op for consultation and rehabilitation.

Referral of patients for surgery:

  • DVM completes the surgery service referral form and submits to VSS team, along with pertinent medical records (including a clinical summary, radiographs, lab work, etc).
  • Information is reviewed by the VSS team and determined if the case is appropriate for our service (we do not offer 24hour care so complex or critical cases will be encouraged to seek care at a 24h care facility).
  • Consultation is scheduled. A medical summary will be submitted to the primary care DVM the day of the consultation.
  • If appropriate, surgery is scheduled.

Depending on the timing of surgery, we may ask primary care DVMs to dispense pre-anesthesia oral medications.
